A Sunrise Family Beach Session in Destin, Florida

There’s something magical about meeting a family on the sand before the sun has fully risen over the Gulf. As a Destin photographer, sunrise sessions are some of my very favorite — the light is impossibly soft, the beach is quiet, and the whole world feels like it’s holding its breath for that first golden moment. The Dodson family met me on the shoreline just as the sky was turning shades of gold, pink, and pastel blue, and what unfolded was one of the most beautiful multi-generational family sessions I’ve had the privilege to capture.

Meeting the Dodson Family on the Shore

The Dodson family arrived brimming with excitement and anticipation — grandparents, parents, three grown daughters, a young couple, and the sweetest baby girl, all together for a rare beach trip and a chance to document this season of life. They kicked off their shoes, let the powdery sand tickle their toes, and immediately settled into the easy, joyful rhythm that comes when a family genuinely loves spending time together.

Coordinated Coastal Style: Whites, Blues, and Lilac

Their outfits were absolute perfection for a sunrise session on the Emerald Coast. Mom wore a flowing blue floral maxi dress while Dad and Grandpa coordinated in crisp white linen shirts with blue shorts. The three daughters complemented the palette beautifully in a white sundress, a blue sundress, and a soft lilac dress, while the baby girl wore a tiny floral romper that tied the whole family together. The coastal whites, blues, and lilacs played gorgeously against the pastel sunrise sky and emerald gulf water.

Multi-Generational Family Portraits

We started with the full family — three generations gathered on the powdery shoreline as the sun climbed higher and washed everyone in that warm, golden Destin light. Grandparents, parents, three sisters, the young couple, and the baby all together in one frame is something truly special, and I made sure to capture plenty of variations: the whole group standing, seated in the sand, walking hand-in-hand toward the water, and gathered in a sweet group hug.

From there we broke into smaller groupings. The grandparents shared a tender embrace in the sunrise light and walked together near the gulf surf — moments that will mean the world to this family for generations. Mom posed with her three daughters and her granddaughter, and Dad shared a sweet pose with his three girls. The three sisters laughed together in the sand, walked the shoreline holding hands, and played in the gentle surf with the baby — frames full of pure joy and sisterhood.

The Young Couple and Their Baby Girl

Some of the most tender moments of the morning belonged to the young couple and their little girl. We captured them kneeling on the wet sand to gaze at their baby, lifting her up between them, sharing a quiet pose, and wrapping each other in a hug while she snuggled close. I also grabbed a few of just the baby — sitting alone in the soft sand in her floral romper, the picture of beach-baby sweetness.

Sunrise sessions on Destin Beach are some of my favorites because:

  • The beach is quiet — no crowds, no umbrellas, just your family and the gulf
  • Sleepy little ones often photograph the most beautifully right after waking up
  • The Emerald Coast sky and turquoise water absolutely glow at first light
