Purple and pink clouds stretching across the sky, emerald water rolling onto sugar white sand and a family with three energetic boys who were ready to play: this evening was a perfect example of why I love Destin sunset family photos. We spent the session on the beach in Destin, Florida as the sun went down over the Gulf, and the sky got more colorful with every minute.

A Sunset Family Session on the Beach in Destin

We started with classic portraits of the whole family standing and sitting together in the sand, then let the boys take the lead. There was waving at the camera, splashing through the surf, digging in the sand with Dad and plenty of piggyback laughter. As the sun sank lower we captured Mom and Dad together, sweet moments of Mom holding the littlest one at the water’s edge, and the whole family together under a sky full of purple clouds.

About Destin, the World’s Luckiest Fishing Village

Destin sits on a peninsula in Okaloosa County between the Gulf of Mexico and Choctawhatchee Bay. The town is named after Leonard Destin, a fishing captain from New London, Connecticut who settled here in the mid 1800s, and it was incorporated as a city in 1984. Today Destin calls itself the World’s Luckiest Fishing Village and is home to one of the largest charter fishing fleets in Florida. East Pass connects the bay to the Gulf, and just inside it you will find Crab Island, a favorite spot for boaters on summer days. Along the Gulf, Destin’s beaches are famous for their emerald green water and some of the whitest sand in the world, made of finely ground quartz crystal carried down from the Appalachian Mountains. That bright white sand and clear green water make a beautiful, natural backdrop for family portraits.

By evening the beach has calmed down, the heat of the day has eased and the light turns soft and flattering on every skin tone. The white sand reflects that light back onto your faces, and the sky changes color minute by minute, which gives every family a gallery full of variety. Letting Kids Be Kids at the Beach

Some of my favorite images from this session happened when the boys were simply being themselves: running through the waves, sitting in the shallow water and wrestling with Dad in the sand. I always mix classic posed portraits with plenty of time to play, because those candid moments show who your family really is. • Book early. Sunset is the most requested session time, and vacation weeks in Destin fill quickly.
• Plan around the sunset. Sunset times shift through the year, so we set your start time around the sunset for your session date.
