Pink and lavender clouds rolling over the pass, emerald water on both sides and the whole family perched on the big granite boulders: this evening was a perfect example of why I love Destin Jetties sunset family photos. The jetties at East Pass in Destin, Florida are one of the most distinctive spots on the Emerald Coast, and the sky gave us an unforgettable backdrop from the first frame to the last.

A Sunset Family Session at the Destin Jetties

We started out on the rocks with the whole group together, then broke into smaller groupings so everyone got their moment. The girls sat together on the boulders in their flowing dresses, the boys stood tall with the Destin skyline behind them, and we moved down to the sea oats and dunes near the jetties for a few classic group portraits on the soft white sand. Every setting gave us a completely different look, all within a short walk.

Why the Destin Jetties Make Such a Unique Backdrop

Most beach portraits along the Gulf feature sand and water, which is beautiful, but the jetties add something extra. The rugged texture of the rocks contrasts with the soft colors of the sky and the clear green water of the pass, and the Destin condos on the horizon give your photos a true sense of place. Outfits That Pop Against the Rocks and Sky

This group nailed their color palette. Soft blue, lavender and blush dresses for the girls, paired with navy, white and light blue shirts and khaki shorts for the boys, looked beautiful against the gray rocks and pastel clouds. Individual Portraits for Every Kid

Group photos are the reason families book, but the individual portraits are often the images they treasure most. At this session each of the kids got their own portraits on the rocks, some sitting barefoot on the boulders and some standing with the pass behind them. These are the photos that end up on grandparents’ walls and in graduation slideshows years later.

Tips for Planning Your Destin Jetties Sunset Family Photos

• Book early. Sunset sessions are the most requested time slot, and vacation weeks in Destin fill quickly.
• Plan around the sunset. Sunset times change through the year, so we set your start time around the sunset for your session date. Learn more about sunset beach photography.
• Wear shoes you can manage on the rocks. The boulders can be uneven, so plan to walk out carefully and slip off shoes for the photos if you like the barefoot look.
• Keep it relaxed. Every session is a mix of posed portraits and candid moments, and I will guide you through every pose.
