Fiery orange and pink skies, calm emerald water and the Sheff family barefoot on the sugar white sand: this evening was everything I love about Rosemary Beach sunset family photos. This session was also a little different from most, because this family means so much to ours. We spent the evening on the beach in Rosemary Beach, Florida with Coach Sheff, Amber, Bryson and Emerie as the sun dropped toward the Gulf, and the sky kept changing color from the first frame to the very last.

A Family Who Means So Much to Us

Some sessions feel like work. This one felt like spending an evening with family. Coach Sheff saw something in my son Brody that no one else saw. This past year, he helped Brody become the best baseball player he could be, and he did it by believing in him first.

Bryson, Brody and their teammates are like brothers. They encourage each other, push each other and are a positive influence on each other on and off the field. Watching them play together as a real team is magical. Not every kid gets to experience that, and we know how lucky we are. Our family is so grateful to Coach Sheff, Amber and the whole Kilcrease family for everything they have given these boys. Photographing them on the beach in Rosemary Beach was a small way to say thank you.

A Sunset Family Session in Rosemary Beach

We started with relaxed portraits of the whole family standing together at the water’s edge, then let Bryson and Emerie lead the way with walks down the shoreline, piggyback rides and plenty of laughing. As the sun sank lower we captured silhouettes of the family holding hands against the glowing sky, sweet portraits of Amber and Coach Sheff in the surf, and cozy moments of everyone sitting together in the sand.

About Rosemary Beach on Scenic Highway 30A

Rosemary Beach sits at the eastern end of Scenic Highway 30A in Walton County, between Destin and Panama City Beach. Founded in 1995 and planned by the same New Urbanism design firm behind Seaside and Alys Beach, the town was built to be walkable, with homes set close together, a charming town center of shops and restaurants, green spaces and dune walkovers leading down to the Gulf. Its architecture draws inspiration from the French Quarter in New Orleans, St. Augustine, Charleston and the West Indies, with balconies, high ceilings and a soft, neutral color palette. Add the quiet, uncrowded beach in the evening and it is easy to see why families come back to Rosemary Beach year after year, and why it is one of my favorite places to photograph along 30A.

Why Sunset Is Magic on the Beach in Rosemary Beach

The beach in Rosemary Beach faces the Gulf to the south, so on clear evenings the sunset lights up the entire sky with color and reflects across the wet sand and water. The light is soft and flattering on every skin tone, and the colors change minute by minute, which gives every family a gallery full of variety. See more examples of my sunset beach photography.

Soft Neutrals and Sage Green on the Sand

This family’s outfits were a perfect fit for the beach. A flowing blush maxi dress for Amber, a sage green dress for Emerie, and light blue and white for the guys blended beautifully with the pastel and orange sky. Portraits for Every Part of the Family

Beyond the group shots, we made time for every combination: Amber with each of the kids, Coach Sheff swinging the kids along the shoreline, Bryson and Emerie together, individual portraits of each of them and romantic portraits of Amber and Coach Sheff in the surf. Those smaller groupings are often the images families end up framing the most. For a family that gives so much of their time to other people’s kids, I loved making sure they had beautiful images of just them.

• Plan around the sunset. Sunset times shift through the year, so we set your start time around the sunset for your session date.
