Some skies you plan for. This one we just got handed. The P couple met me at Dune Allen Beach to mark another year together, and the Gulf answered with molten orange along the horizon, magenta stacked above it, and water that stayed emerald right up until the last frame. Ten years as a Dune Allen Beach photographer and I still stop to look at a sky like that.

If you are searching for a 30A couples photographer for an anniversary, this session is a good picture of how the hour actually goes: slow at first, a lot of walking, a lot of laughing, and by the end both of them soaked to the knees and completely past caring.

They chose Dune Allen on purpose. It sits at the quiet western end of Scenic Highway 30A, and on an August evening we had long stretches of sand almost to ourselves — which matters more for a couples session than it does for almost anything else I photograph.

Most visitors know 30A through Seaside, WaterColor and Rosemary Beach. Dune Allen is the other side of that coin: the westernmost community on 30A, sitting inside Santa Rosa Beach, older and lower-key, with far more sea oats than storefronts.

For a 30A sunset couples session that is exactly what you want. Fewer beach chairs left out at dusk, fewer people walking through the back of your frames, and enough open shoreline that a couple can actually forget a camera is pointed at them. There are two regional beach accesses here — Dune Allen and Fort Panic — both with parking, restrooms and dune walkovers, which makes arriving in nice clothes far less of an ordeal than it sounds.

Dune Allen also sits among something genuinely rare. Five of South Walton’s coastal dune lakes — Allen, Campbell, Morris, Oyster and Stallworth — are tucked behind these dunes. Coastal dune lakes exist in only a handful of places on earth, and having them a short walk from the Gulf gives this end of 30A a wilder, less manicured feel than the towns to the east. It is worth an evening on its own even when nobody is photographing you.

For most of the hour we had soft pastel light, which is lovely and easy and flattering. Then, about ten minutes before the sun touched the water, a band of high cloud lit up from beneath and the whole western sky went orange and hot pink at once.

That is when I moved them straight down to the waterline. Wet sand at Dune Allen turns into a mirror at that hour, so every bit of color in the sky comes back at you from below. A few frames later the clouds shifted to deep violet, and we kept shooting through it.

Anniversary sessions are my favorite thing that almost nobody books. Couples will happily hire a photographer to document getting engaged and then go a decade without a single good picture of the two of them together — every photo is one of them plus the kids, or a phone selfie at a restaurant.

An hour on the beach fixes that. No agenda, nobody else to wrangle, and at the end you have images of the actual relationship rather than the event.

I photograph engagement and couples sessions on 30A for anniversaries, babymoons, honeymoons, vow renewals and plenty of couples with no occasion at all. The session runs the same either way. If you have been together long enough that your last real photo together is on a disposable camera, that is reason enough.

Her look did a huge amount of work: a gold beaded bodice with a long, sheer white tulle skirt that caught every bit of Gulf breeze. He kept it simple in a cream linen shirt and matching trousers, sleeves pushed up, barefoot.

That combination is close to ideal for 30A beach photos. The neutral cream keeps him from competing with the sky, the gold picks up the sunset instead of fighting it, and the tulle turns wind — usually a nuisance — into the best thing in the frame. The last fifteen minutes of this session happened in the Gulf. They waded out past their knees, he picked her up, a wave arrived at exactly the wrong moment, and the pictures got noticeably better the second they stopped worrying about staying dry.

I never push a couple into the water, but I always mention it, because the in-water frames are almost always the ones people order large. Bring a towel, wear something you do not mind soaking, and decide before the session that ruining the outfit is allowed.

Timing drives everything. I only schedule at sunrise or sunset, and sunset on 30A moves quickly through the season: around 7:30 p.m. in mid-August, closer to 7:10 p.m. by the end of the month, and earlier every week into the fall. I set your start time from your actual date once it is booked.

Book your session for the start of your trip rather than the end. Nobody is sunburned or windblown yet, and if the weather turns we still have the rest of your stay to move to.
