Tip #1: Match Your Outfits to Your Home Décor
Your portraits will likely hang on your wall for years. So take a moment to think about your home before you plan your outfits.
My personal photography style is bright, colorful, and bold. My home, however, leans more glam and vintage. Because of this, I would never display a bold red-and-yellow canvas in my living room. The colors would simply clash with my space.
When you plan your 30A family photography session, pick a color palette that flows with your décor. For a coastal, “light and airy” beach home, soft neutrals, whites, sandy tans, and pale blues will feel right at home. For a darker, more dramatic space, deeper jewel tones may shine.
I know that picking outfits can feel stressful. Luckily, we will chat in detail about wardrobe during our pre-session planning calls and emails, so you will never have to figure it out alone.
What to Wear for a Summer 30A Family Photo Session
Summers along 30A and Santa Rosa Beach are warm, breezy, and full of golden light. With a little planning, your summer family session can feel cool, polished, and effortless.
First, choose lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton, linen, and gauzy knits. These materials let your skin breathe while still photographing beautifully.
Next, do not be afraid to show a little skin. Tank tops, flowy dresses, and tailored shorts all look wonderful in coastal portraits. They also help everyone stay comfortable in the Florida humidity.
Then, lean into summer accessories. For example, wide-brim sun hats add elegance for moms, while oversized sunglasses look classic on everyone. Fun props such as beach balls, balloons, or even an ice cream cone can also add personality.
Finally, think carefully about shoes. Flip-flops, loafers, open-toe sandals, or sweet sneakers for the kids all work well. For our sunset beach sessions, toes in the sand are always the perfect choice.
What to Wear for a Fall 30A Family Photo Session
Fall on the Emerald Coast is one of my favorite seasons to shoot. The light turns warm and soft, the crowds thin out, and there is a gentle crispness in the air. Of course, fall is also the perfect time to layer up and have fun with texture.
To start, pick colors that complement the season rather than compete with it. Earthy reds, burnt orange, plum, creamy nude, mustard, deep navy, and olive all photograph beautifully in autumn light.
In addition, a touch of flannel, plaid, or a subtle pattern is a great way to tie multiple outfits together. Just be careful not to put everyone in the same print, which can feel overwhelming on camera.
Next, layer up. Scarves, cardigans, denim jackets, blazers, and felt hats add depth and visual interest. They also make for great wardrobe changes during the session.
Finally, finish the look with seasonal shoes. Riding boots, ankle booties, loafers, or simple flats all pair perfectly with fall outfits along 30A and Destin.
What to Wear for a Spring 30A Family Photo Session
Spring is a beautiful time for family portraits along 30A. The Gulf turns that signature emerald green, wildflowers begin to bloom, and the light grows softer by the week.
To start, embrace the season. A floral print dress, a butterfly necklace, or a pastel button-down can add a sweet, springy touch to your outfits.
Then, channel the colors of spring. For inspiration, simply look outside. Soft greens, blush pinks, buttery yellows, sky blues, beige, and khaki all photograph beautifully against the dunes and sea oats.
In addition, plan for variable weather. Spring along the coast can shift from warm to cool in the same evening. Light cardigans, denim jackets, spring scarves, and easy vests are great wardrobe additions.
Finally, if you are still deciding on a location, take a peek at my favorite 30A and Destin photo session spots. They each have a different springtime personality.
