Sunset and Sophistication: A Seaside Session with Teen Boys
There is a common misconception that family photos are only for the stage of life filled with toddlers and grass stains. But as a Seaside photographer, I’ve found that sessions with older teenagers are some of the most rewarding. This recent sunset shoot in Seaside, Florida, with the “R” Family and their three teen sons was a perfect example of how the “golden hour” evolves as your family grows.
Instead of chasing little ones, we focused on the genuine connection, the height differences (which seem to change by the week at this age!), and the easy-going energy of three brothers who are truly becoming friends.
A Coastal Backdrop for Grown-Up Memories
We began the session near the iconic Seaside pavilions. While we still love the classic architecture, with older boys, the vibe is much more relaxed. We swapped the “run and play” prompts for more natural, editorial-style posing. As Seaside Florida photographers, we know that teens often feel more comfortable when the session feels like a hang-out rather than a production.
The boys brought a great sense of humor to the dunes, making for some fantastic candid shots that captured their individual personalities and their bond as brothers.
The Magic of the 30A Golden Hour
As the sun began to dip, we moved toward the water. The emerald green Gulf provided a sophisticated, calm backdrop that complemented the family’s coordinated attire. For families with teens, we often recommend a slightly more “elevated” coastal look—think crisp linens and muted tones—which look incredible against the white sand of Seaside.
The highlight of the evening was catching that perfect, late-stage sunset glow. There’s a certain maturity in these photos; they aren’t just pictures of a vacation, they are portraits of a family on the cusp of new chapters, college, careers, and beyond.
Why You Should Book a Session with Your Teens
It’s easy to stop booking annual photos once the kids hit high school, but these are actually the years you’ll want to remember most. Before the house gets quiet, capturing your “grown” kids in a place as beautiful as Seaside is a gift to your future self.
Pro Tip: For families with teenagers, we recommend scheduling your session for the very last hour of light. Teens are usually more than happy to sleep in and save their energy for a stunning, late-afternoon beach stroll!
