As a Destin family photographer, I’ve had the privilege of capturing countless beautiful moments through my lens — but there are some sessions that stand out as truly special. The Hendricks family’s sunset beach session was one of those unforgettable evenings: a family of five, a watercolor sky, and the kind of warm, easy connection between parents and kids that makes my whole job feel like a gift.
A Picture-Perfect Sunset on Destin Beach
The evening was picture-perfect — the sun was easing toward the horizon and casting a warm golden glow over the sugar-white sand of Destin Beach. As the sky shifted from peach and cream to vivid pink and violet, the Hendricks family arrived looking polished and relaxed. Mom wore a soft sage-and-white tank dress, dad wore crisp white linen, the two young brothers were in matching pink chambray button-ups with khaki shorts, and their older sister with curly hair stood between them in a gorgeous sage-green ruffle dress. The whole color palette played beautifully against the jade-green Gulf and the pastel sky.
The Hendricks Family Portraits
We started with classic standing portraits on the white sand — parents centered with all three children gathered close, then variations with the parents flanking the kids, and a few quieter black-and-white frames as the surf softly blurred behind them. Next we moved to seated portraits, with the family laughing genuinely while the parents leaned in toward their three children beneath a watercolor sunset sky. I love how candid these came out — real smiles, real laughter, and that easy comfort that only families this close can pull off.
Individual & Sibling Frames
Once the family group shots were in the bag, we broke out a few individual and sibling frames. The older brother stood smiling along the Destin shoreline as a brilliant pink-and-orange sunset glowed above the Gulf. The younger blonde brother gave me his sweetest grin in his pink chambray and khakis beneath a peach-and-violet sky. Their older sister posed confidently with her hand on her hip in the sage-green ruffle dress, soft pastels behind her. We finished the sibling set with all three of them seated side by side on the sand and standing arm-in-arm with the Gulf horizon stretching behind them — frames their parents are going to treasure forever.
A Tender Mom & Dad Moment
While the kids took a quick break, I pulled mom and dad to the water’s edge for a few moments alone. Mom leaned into dad along the Destin shoreline at sunset, jade Gulf waves rolling and a violet-streaked sky behind them. We caught a sweet color frame and a soft black-and-white portrait of the two of them — the kind of images every parent should have hanging on their wall as a reminder that the marriage came first.
The Real Magic: Family Together at the Water’s Edge
Then we walked the whole family down to the shoreline for the moments I love most. Dad knelt in his white linen at the water’s edge as mom and the three kids gathered around him beneath a soft pastel sunset, Gulf waves cresting just behind. Mom and dad shared a tender kiss while the three children wrapped their arms around them — captured in both color and black-and-white. The kids piled in for a hug, the parents kissed again, and the soft pink-and-mauve sunset sky did the rest.
Playful Moments in the Surf
No family session at Destin is complete without movement. The Hendricks kids took off running — the three siblings raced laughing through the shallow Gulf surf while their parents stood smiling in the background under a vivid pink-and-violet sunset sky. The older brother and sister splashed and laughed as they raced through the surf, and mom and dad swung the youngest boy by his hands while his older brother and sister laughed beside them. We finished with the entire family wrapped together at the water’s edge under a dramatic stormy sunset, dad pulling the youngest boy close as the others leaned in.
Why I Love Photographing Families in Destin
- Destin’s sugar-white sand and jade Gulf waves are unmatched anywhere on the Emerald Coast.
- Sunset light over Destin paints the sky in pinks, peaches, violets, and dramatic stormy mauves.
- The wide, soft shoreline gives families plenty of room to move, run, and play without crowds.
- Movement-based prompts — running, swinging kids, splashing — make Destin family galleries feel alive.
What to Expect from a Destin Sunset Family Session
My Destin sunset family sessions typically run about 60 to 75 minutes, beginning roughly an hour before sunset. We move through full family standing and seated portraits, parent-only frames, sibling combinations, individual portraits of each child, and plenty of candid playtime in the surf. I prompt with movement and connection (kisses, hugs, swinging, walking, running) so the gallery feels real rather than posed, and you’ll receive a mix of color and black-and-white edits.
Serving Families Across Destin and the Emerald Coast
In addition to Destin, I photograph families across Miramar Beach, Sandestin, Santa Rosa Beach, Dune Allen, Gulf Place, Blue Mountain Beach, Grayton Beach, Watercolor, Seaside, Seagrove Beach, WaterSound, Alys Beach, Rosemary Beach, and Inlet Beach. Destin — with its wide, soft beach and dramatic sunset skies — remains one of my very favorite spots for family portraits.
A Treasured Family Memory
The joy and easy love that permeated the air that evening were truly remarkable. As a photographer, it’s these moments that remind me why I do what I do. Capturing the raw, unfiltered expressions of love and laughter between the Hendricks family was an absolute highlight, and I’m so grateful to have been a part of this magical beachside evening that will be cherished for generations to come.
